Sidney Crosby Out Idefinitely - NHL to Shut Down Indefinitely

I'm not sure if you've seen the news. It's hard to say who has and who hasn't with the NHL getting little mainstream coverage in non-hockey cities. The NHL has decided to shut down the league while Sidney Crosby recovers from a high ankle strain.

There's an expression, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket." I fear that over the last two years this is what they have done with Sidney "the Savior" Crosby by making him the lone face of hockey. All of the NHL commercials are about Crosby and much of the NHL coverage focuses on Crosby. Watching the Winter Classic it was clear that NBC was pushing Crosby. Every third word out of the broadcast team's mouths was Crosby. That leaves room for two other words, right? Well, sadly many times one of those remaining two words was Sidney.

What will the NHL do now that Crosby is out with a high ankle strain indefinitely? I recommend that they close the doors of all of the arenas until Crosby is ready. What else can they do? There isn't another player in the league worthy of watching. At least, that's what their promotions lead me to believe.

As of this morning, Crosby has missed three games in his short NHL career. I would not be surprised to see him either forced back into play before he is properly healed or feel pressure to return too soon because of his being the marquee player in the league. If Crosby isn't given the time to heal properly, I fear that this may be career threatening injury in the sense that it could linger and nag him and over time diminish his skills and numbers.

Put all of your eggs into one basket when you only have one basket. There are a wealth of baskets scattered throughout North America. If the NHL, the Penguins, and Sidney Crosby are smart, they will let his injury heal properly before sending him back out on the ice.

In the meantime, Crosby can make more commercials.
